Music and psychology double major Karalyn Enz ’13 (Milford, N.J) presented the best student paper at the 34th Northeast Regional Conference of the College Music Society at Keene State College last month.

“The Intimacy of Expression: Implications of Performance Indications in Federico Mompou’s Impresiones Íntimas for Guitar Arrangement and Performance” resulted from a collaboration between Enz and Jorge Torres, associate professor of music, and was one of just three undergraduate papers selected for the prestigious conference. She and Torres worked on her arrangement and performance of the piece on two guitars.

“The project that I presented is part of my music honors thesis,” she says. “I first heard the nine piano miniatures that comprise Impresiones Íntimas by Federico Mompou, the subject of my thesis, when I was in high school. Last year, as I was doing research for this project, I found two different published versions of Impresiones Íntimas that have different expression markings, which really piqued my interest in researching the work from a musicological standpoint.”

Enz credits her experiences at Lafayette for greatly preparing her for the presentation. Events such as the Music Department’s monthly informal First Wednesday recitals, at which Enz performed with Torres several times last semester, improved her performance skills.

“The feedback that I received from other students and professors at Lafayette helped me make revisions that made my presentation the best it could be for the conference,” she says. “Professor Torres has been an invaluable resource for me throughout the research process. Not only did I apply what I learned in my musicology classes and guitar lessons, but I also read research articles in Spanish and translated Mompou’s treatise from Catalan to English. In fact, I am taking a Spanish course this semester out of interest sparked by this project, a subject that I haven’t taken since high school.”

After graduation, Enz will pursue a Ph.D. in psychology.
